This course focuses on the Gospel of John through the lens of Empire Criticism. We will explore how the Fourth Gospel is situated within the Roman-dominated world of the first century, examining how the ancient world conceptualized power, patronage, and honor. By engaging with postcolonial approaches, social identity theory, and the mechanics of Johannine irony, students will deepen their sensitivity and skills in understanding the text. Because the majority of students in this course serve in pastoral or ministry contexts, a primary focus will be translating these socio-political and exegetical insights into faithful preaching, teaching, and pastoral care for today's church.
