A Word About This Learning Space
This course will trace the movement from biblical text to sermon delivery and aid students in forming study habits for shaping and preaching biblical sermons. Beginning by examining the study of biblical passages for homiletical purposes, involving exegesis and hermeneutics, the class will trace the transition from text to sermon, with attention to the sermon having a form that arises from the biblical passage. The class will emphasize effective preaching in the context of gathered worship.
This is an online course in biblical preaching, not simply a place to collect information about sermons. It is a shared learning community in which we will practice the habits required for faithful proclamation: careful listening, theological reflection, honest interpretation, thoughtful preparation, and constructive response.
Because preaching is never only about “saying something,” this course will ask more of you than the accumulation of ideas. Your presence matters. Your preparation matters. The way you listen matters. The way you speak to and with others matters. We are here not only to discuss preaching, but to begin practicing the kind of attention, discipline, and generosity that preaching requires.
